FASHION
Fashion of the nineteen sixties’ is still used today
as this decade was marked as the time when there were social changes and was
dominated by the youth. During these years after World War II, It was when the
baby boomers were the youth and they wanted to their own fashion styles. Due to
the Vietnamese war, civil rights movement, Woodstock; fashion became divergent.
However, fashion could not have been appreciated without some of the great
designers. Here are some of the most influential designers in the swinging
sixties. There was Andre Courreges, who was a French designer who invented
mini-skirts and go- go boots. He was also known for his unique usage of
materials like plastic that pushed fashion in a way that it had not been before
and it became a part by which the sixties became a common decade. Also there
was Mary Quant also a designer who became an icon for her designs of hot pants.
Also, "pop art and youth culture were two huge uprisings in the sixties,
and their relationship with fashion, particularly the fashion of Quant, was
indelible”.
Last but not least was Oleg Cassini, whom his
amazing wok had not seen before, and was described as classicism and sophistication.
His was chosen to design clothes for Jacqueline Kennedy when she became the
first lady. However, his selection was controversial at the time, his simple
dresses and pillbox hats have become iconic symbols of class and femininity.
Overall the difference between men’s and women’s clothing was rare. Women’s trends were way different, not only
that they wanted to be independent, also they needed a change in how they
dressed not the long dresses, no makeup or different hair styles.
Research shows that studies say: “in the late
1960s that certain Manhattan restaurants refused to let fashionable women in
who wore Saint Laurent’s clothes”(Fashion,2005). It was because see-through
fabrics, put women in pant-suits, and turned safari wear into desirable,
luxurious fashion” (Fashion, 2005).There was also, a new trend called the unisex;
it allowed men and women to wear the same types of clothes, meaning that they
designed the same. During this time Men types of shirts like buffalo plaid,
“this one was popular along with lumberjacks; another form of shirts that were
tight fitted and jackets. And these were a good fit with the hipster pants
which were to be worn below the belly button also came into fashion during the
decade and is modified today.
music
Because of race relations in America at that time,
meaning the 1960s music began to change, more genres began to be introduced.
People often discuss the impact of music on society but often times; music is a
reflection of society. Music in the sixties was not only helpful or lighten up
moods for people who had long days at work but; also it was entertaining as the
artists began to evolve certain types of dances that go with the lyrics. These
are some of the musicians that changed the American people’s perspective on
music: a band named the Bryds and guys like Dylan. These bands started an
underground wave that streamed throughout the sixties and this Era was called
the "Psychedelic Era.” This era introduced drugs such as marijuana, LSD
and acid as important aspects in the creation of music and was used by the
listeners to enhance their experience.
Another most loved group that used drugs for help
with expression was Big Brother and the Holding Company. This band sang blues
and techno color with the aid from a lady well known…Janis Joplin. Janis was
good at screaming because she felt that her voice was short for a real singer. Also,
there was Jerry Garcia who felt that life without drugs was not thing that is
the way he could sing a four minute song on the stage and turned it into a
twenty minutes song; also his band made up music as they went along. They
spread all over the united states throughout the sixties and Young
hipsters greeted this new music with open arms and said that drugs changed the
way many experienced this new wave of music.
People could
not have just enjoyed the music if there was nothing else added into it,
American bandstand and local dances participated in writing songs that, the
lyrics were attached to movies that went along with them. And the melodic
sounds of the music made average fans of the artists sing along while they
perform. Overall, music was helpful because it was also after
the end of WWII, people needed something to cheer them up and also a lot of the
bands that are notorious for promoting promiscuity and drug use also spoke
about the ills of society. In The end both White and African Americans started
to love another type of music which is Soul. "Soul music of this time
began to give blacks and whites common ground as well because this music was
liked and enjoyed by both groups."

From nineteen sixty to nineteen sixty nine;
the most popular and fashionable sports for young people were: football,
tennis, and volleyball. Almost all bays had idols that played football and
tennis. They could watch them on television or hear about them on the radio.
During this time there were not many Olympic sports. Only, football, running,
handball, and basketball participated; and these teams had no one to sponsor
them. Some of the popular athletes were Wilt Chamberlain, who played
basketball, Johnny Unitas, who was one, the greatest quarterbacks in football
history; some say that he was the reason why most baby boomers got interested
in football, because they wanted to be like him. He first played for the
Baltimore cloth; later he became a record setting quarterback for the national
football league. He received the Golden
arm award and that prestigious award bears the name of who many refer to as the
finest quarterback to ever play the game of football.
movies and TV shows
During the nineteen sixties, American was conducting in a time of fantasy world. For example, humanized animals, witches, , airborne clergy and other TV shows were a piece of the decade’s entertainment that one could find on TV all the time. For example there were several movies evolving in the early years of the decade. Television in the sixties was unique compared to today. There were only three channels ABC, CBS, and NBC. Television during the decade was an entertainment for the whole family, on weekend night’s family would get together with popcorn and beverage to watch their favorite shows. Research shows that “Batman' was TV's hottest commodity in January, 1967, but shows with a sci-fi or fantasy bent were falling by the wayside by 1968.” And these are some of the most famous actors of the sixties:
Paul Newman, who could play any character that was given to him and Gregory Peck, was named among the Greatest Male Stars of All Time, by the American film institute. These shows and actors are the reasons why family shared their love and their situations, also a good way of getting together, eat and talk while watching those TV shows that they both enjoyed. That shows that it had a good impact the American families and keeping the culture going no matter the situation. During rehearsals he met actress Joanne Woodward, who was serving as an understudy for the production.
· Every year, some families would gather around the TV with a big bowl of Orville Redenbacher to watch "A Charlie Brown Christmas" and "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.”(Staying in, 2009) And other said that “It wouldn't feel like the holidays without Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus, Snoopy and the whole gang. Pick up the "Peanuts: nineteen sixties Collection" to get six classics inspired by the Charles Schultz comic strip.” Breakfast At Tiffany’s” The film’s first frame shows New York’s famed jeweler store, Tiffany’s. The film was groundbreaking not just because it remains the most sophisticated crafted romantic-comedy of all time, but more crucially because it is a landmark drama. And also there were other shows like Batman, Bonanza, Bewitched and bronco that kept Family entertained on certain occasions. During this decade there were a lot veterans who were trying to get back on their feet and perhaps one f the options that was available was to be in the movie industry; which probably made them a lot money.

Wilt chamberlain
I chose to this topic because I think that it’s
different and interesting. Basketball in sixties could have seem as a funny
game to watch but yet entertaining; because everyone was aiming to see who
could throw a ball in the hoop. Some thought it was cool but it got more interesting
When Wilt Chamberlain came. He was one
of eleven children and his parents were devoted to family and work. When he was
little he helped around the neighborhood and made little money to help his
family. When Wilt was playing basketball, his average was 50 points a
game! Nobody could stop this dominant 7'
2" player. He made them see the Basketball as a cool game and that he
could make all Americans watch him dunk the ball with his jumping skills.
He
played for the Philadelphia/San Francisco Warriors, the Philadelphia 76ers and
the Los Angeles Lakers of the NBA. He got a nick name from his career which is “Wilt
the Silt”; he achieved an average of 30.1 points per each game and over
his career, and holds the record for the most points scored in one game. Research
shows that he scored 30,000 points during his career. he died in 1999 and after thirteen years he is still some people's hero. And he will always be known for his great skills and how the helped the generations after him to keep playing and some want to be like him.
To finalize, I can conclude that sports also were a
big part of the sixties due to the lack of places to go because of the war
between whites and African Americans; that was the only where they could both
be at and not cause problems. Just the fact that they showed these athletes
love and pride is important not only for the American’s reputation but also for
its pride. Because they were a lot of places where these two groups could not
stand each other but when it came to entertaining, they would put their
differences aside and support their player because the best part of it was to
see their player wining. And entertainment was important because the nineteen
sixties ‘entertainment including music, movies and TV shows, fashion, fashion helped families by bringing
them together on certain occasions. For example movie nights and dressing
comfortable without being judged, and to top it all, music was at first sight
to lighten up moods and keep them entertained.

ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your post about fashion in the 60’s. I personally love clothes and think it’s awesome how the popular clothing items in the past are now coming back. I remember the mini skirts and the go-go boots, however I do not know what hot pants are. I did Google them because they sounded interesting, as if they were some really bright color pants. It was funny to see that they were actually colorful short shorts. I think it is good for designers to receive credit for their designs and you did a good job at highlighting their popular and famous work.

ReplyDeleteI am going to say that once again your music post was very interesting to read. I am just going to go ahead and say that your whole research on entertainment in the 60’s was indeed very entertaining. I love listening to music and have never heard of any of these artists but I am now definitely intrigued to learn more about them. However, it is sad to know that they had to use drugs in order to help them express their music. I believe that comes from within and no type of drug should be used to make one look like a good musician.

ReplyDeleteIt is amazing how some of these tv shows and stations are still very popular. I was not aware that ABC, CBS, and NBC were the three major channels during that time. I do not watch tv as often as I used to, but I have seen, “A Charlie Brown Christmas” a couple of times and it is one of my favorites. It is just crazy how history goes by so quickly and everything that one believed was popular during childhood has been popular way before that. I am interested in watching, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” cause I have always heard about it and have never gotten the chance but maybe now I will.

ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading and looking at the pictures of the famous sports athletes’ during this time period. I personally really enjoy sports, my favorite is soccer. I was a bit upset to find out that soccer was not as popular back then. However, I also enjoyed learning about “Wilt the Silt” and how he went to the top and followed his dreams of being a famous basketball player. The other person that was also interesting was Jim Brown. He also overcame a huge obstacle during that time which was racial discrimination. All of these athletes’ displayed such courage that anyone can accomplish their dreams like them if they just put in effort.

ReplyDeleteThat's really cool that Jaqui Kennedy had a favorite designer. She made the entire population of “western” sophisticated women want her hair. She made the 60s hair style iconic and in period plays about the 60s it is the First Lady Kennedy who's hair style will be displayed as the only hair style of the 60s. That's really cool that the certain designers' clothes were refused to enter places of business because of how provocative they were. For sure, safari prints are still provocative but how much more so in the 60s. I also didn't know that plastic in clothes started in the 60s probably mostly because it really doesn't exist anymore.

ReplyDeleteYeah, acid and LSD certainly had a lot to do with the creation of music. The altered states of mind the drugs created fueled and inspired a lot of the music of the 60s. Some of the artists even wrote songs about the drugs and the effects they had on the artists. The music usually was not explicit about drug use but used metaphors and clever writing to talk about them. And you're right, there were a lot of songs that had nothing to due with drugs but were intended to be cheerful comments on the nation and at that time and music helped ease their troubles.

ReplyDeleteNice comment about the popcorn and gathering around the TV. It is perhaps only a caricature of the 60s rather than an actual way people lived. Even at that time, perhaps that image of the family eating popcorn and watching a late night Jonny Carson episode is more of an advertisement than a fact. I really hadn't heard about Gregory Peck until I saw a movie in which his grandson had stared. He's not famous yet but he certainly has the right genes for movie making. I have found memories of Bewitched. I used to watch it by myself because nobody else liked it.

ReplyDeleteIt's interesting how much football influenced young people at the time. That's probably from where we get the stereotype of jocks vs nerds and the cheerleader girlfriend. It's also interesting that a black man was invited to play in the NFL. He probably learned to be a lot tougher than the other guys because probably took a lot more punishment than usual. “Just six seasons?” I can imagine the finest player in the NFL could retire after just one season but to also have a small movie career on the side is astounding. What an amazing time in history for black athletes.

In response to Wilt Chamberlain
ReplyDeleteI was a started on my basketball team in high school which, as a musician, was really cool to me but an average of 50 points a game is unthinkable. Some may have thought Chamberlain was a ball hog. I also remember singing the National Anthem at a Suns game with a group and being shocked watching these NBA players and how huge they were. Chamberlain was 7'2”! I can't imagine wanted to play against him in any situation. Though I played sports I really didn't like them. I was in first grade in 1999 and I remember the teacher talking about him when he died. What a sad little boy I was for not caring.

ReplyDeleteIt was a very interesting blog post, I did not know that even that time people were using drugs, I was thinking that these thing are recently made. I have lessened to that kind of music’s that were hot in those days, some of those were nice and some I did not like. However, I think these days not only the music change also people’s taste is also changed.

ReplyDeleteFashion is something that changes all the time. In 1960 was a decade that broke fashion tradition, everything was changed in fashioned industry from hats to boots and bikini came into fashion. Even hair styling changed and one of the most important history ladies “Jackie Kennedy” introduced many popular hair and hat fashion.

ReplyDeleteThose days the television programs were so much different than today. In that time family members were closer to each other, they entertainment was gathering together and watch their favorite shows in a black and white television. They were not such entertainment as today and they were number of movie stars and were very famous and people were watching their shows and movies.
